The repairman asked us when was our last time servicing the sewing machine. We sheepishly reply, "Never, for 17 years". To be fair, I do service the sewing machine myself, but again, I'm not an expert.
Mr Sewing Machine is very cheeky. He won't co-operate with my mother, but very co-operative with me. I can sew smoothly but when it comes to my mother's turn to sew, he'll start to get naughty. So, in the end, I'm the one sewing.
Silly Mr. Sewing Machine.
It's our first time sewing a comforter. My mother is always positive in making thing. Too bad I don't inherit her positiveness. However, her too big plan is sometimes too silly to do. Our sewing machine is a simple one, but she imagine the comforter, quilt like quality. With squiggly stitches. When our sewing machine's arm is not that big. How can she think big with limited resources. Sometimes I think that she's having grandiosity.
Just kidding.
First, I align the clothes with the batting. If only it's fusible batting, I'll just iron it and sew the whole thing like sewing a sack. The fusible web that I have is small and light. I intended to use the fusible web to mend a torn dress shirt, which I have yet to do. Procrastinating. This is the tedious part of the job. I leave it to my mother.
Next. Sewing! While sewing the batting, I imagine myself flying above the clouds. The snow white, fluffy batting makes me think that I am sewing the clouds together, sewing while flying.
Sewing billowing clouds...
Mr. Sewing Machine at work...
Daydreaming... I'm manning an aeroplane.
Landing gear? Nope! Nobody put landing gear down when cruising... It drags the aeroplane down, and not aerodynamic.
Then, I keep on sewing until it becomes this...
Not bad for a pilot project huh!
Actually not that simple. It's easy but the batting keeps snagging the fabric. Initially, I use a zig-zag stitch which worsens the snagging. I opt for zig-zag stitch for durability. Since it keeps snagging the fabric, I use straight stitch to fuse the fabrics to the batting and reinforce the stitch with a zig-zag one. It works, but it took us half day to figure it out.
Now my mother is dreaming of sewing another one. Or actually, it's me sewing one.
p/s I should work for Martha Stewart. I can cook, I can sew, I can do simple handyman job... just kidding.
